How we handle your personal information. Last updated September 2026.
1066 Firearms (“we”, “us”) is the data controller for personal information collected through this website. We take the view that we should hold as little of your information as possible, for no longer than we need it.

What we collect, and why
| Information | Why we have it | Lawful basis |
|---|---|---|
| Name, email address, telephone number, the message you send and (if you choose to state it) the type of certificate you hold — submitted through our contact and enquiry forms | To answer your enquiry and, where relevant, to arrange a sale or transfer | Legitimate interests — responding to someone who has contacted us |
| Transaction and certificate details recorded when you buy from us | To keep the register of transactions and make the notifications the Firearms Act 1968 requires | Legal obligation |
| Server log data — IP address, browser, pages requested, timestamps — recorded automatically by our hosting | Security, fault diagnosis and abuse prevention | Legitimate interests — keeping the site running and secure |
Our contact page offers a WhatsApp link. If you use it, your message and your WhatsApp phone number reach us through WhatsApp, which is operated by Meta and processes the message under its own terms and privacy policy — not ours. We keep WhatsApp conversations only as long as we need them to deal with your enquiry, and we do not use the number for marketing.
Clicking the link does not tell us anything until you actually send a message. If you would rather not use WhatsApp, the form, the telephone and email all reach the same people.
Please do not send certificate numbers, or scans or photographs of a certificate, by WhatsApp or email.
The licence renewal checker
The dates you enter into our renewal checker are processed entirely inside your own browser. They are never transmitted to us, never stored on our server, and we have no way of seeing them.
Cookies and analytics
This site sets a session cookie when you submit a form, purely to protect the form against cross-site request forgery. It contains no personal information and expires when you close your browser.
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking. If analytics or embedded content are added later, this section must be updated and a cookie banner added before they go live.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent your information to anybody. We share it only where we have to:
- Our hosting provider, who stores the site and its database on our behalf.
- WhatsApp (Meta), if you choose to message us that way — see the section above.
- Police firearms licensing departments, where the law requires us to notify a transaction or verify a certificate.
- A receiving Registered Firearms Dealer, where you have asked us to transfer a gun to them — limited to what is needed to complete the transfer.
- Carriers approved for the movement of firearms, again limited to what the delivery requires.
- Professional advisers or authorities, where we are legally obliged or where it is necessary to establish or defend legal claims.
How long we keep it
- Website enquiries: up to 24 months from your last contact with us, then deleted.
- Firearms transaction records: for the period required by firearms legislation — our register of transactions is retained as the law directs, and this obligation overrides any request for erasure.
- Accounting records: six years plus the current financial year, as HMRC requires.
- Server logs: typically a short rolling period set by our host.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you; to have inaccurate information corrected; to have information erased where we no longer have a reason to keep it; to restrict or object to how we use it; and to receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on consent you can withdraw it at any time.
Some of these rights are limited where we hold information because firearms law requires us to. We cannot erase a statutory register entry on request.
To exercise any right, email hello@1066firearms.com. We will respond within one month.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Access to the catalogue management area is restricted and password protected, and passwords are stored only as one-way hashes.
Changes
We will update this page when our practices change, and the date at the top will tell you when it last happened.
